How Pennsylvania volleyball works

Rankings, classes, leagues, match rules, and the path from regular season to the PIAA championship.

How these rankings work

This site tracks Pennsylvania girls high school volleyball, with a District 3 focus. The ranking table is the District 3 power ranking, not a coaches poll and not a simple win-loss list.

Each team gets a rating from two pieces: how well it has played, and how strong its schedule has been. Both pieces use class-weighted results, so beating a larger school counts more than beating a smaller one, and losing to a smaller school hurts more than losing to a larger one.

Rating = 55% × TWP + 45% × OWP

TWP · Team weighted winning %

Weighted wins divided by weighted wins plus weighted losses. Only games against PIAA opponents count.

OWP · Opponents’ weighted winning %

The combined weighted records of the teams you have already played. A tough schedule can lift a team with a few losses.

TWPW / TWPL / OWPW / OWPL

The raw weighted win and loss totals behind those percentages, split between your results and your opponents’ results.

What does not count

Games against non-PIAA schools are ignored. Best-of-five tournament matches can count; other tournament formats usually do not.

Teams are sorted by rating, then shown with an overall rank and a class rank. The L-L Standings page is different: it is league record from Lancaster Online, not the power ranking.

For 2026 District 3 girls volleyball, the live ranking source lists a power-ranking freeze of October 7 and a cutoff of October 21. Qualifier counts and dates can change; the district and PIAA publish the official versions.

PIAA is the governing body

Girls high school volleyball in Pennsylvania is governed by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), based in Mechanicsburg.

PIAA sets classifications, eligibility, championship structure, and statewide playing rules. Member schools play a regular-season schedule in local leagues, then try to qualify for district playoffs and, from there, the PIAA championship.

Girls volleyball is a fall sport. Boys volleyball is a separate spring sport with fewer classes. This site is for girls volleyball.

PIAA volleyball follows National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rules, with PIAA bulletins and weekly interpretations for Pennsylvania officials and coaches.

Classes: 1A through 6A

Schools are grouped by size so teams of similar enrollment compete for the same championship. For 2026-27 and 2027-28, girls volleyball uses six classes, based on female enrollment in grades 9–11 as of October 1, 2025.

You will see both styles of names. PIAA often writes A, AA, AAA; this site and many brackets also use 1A, 2A, 3A. They mean the same thing.

1A / A

2A / AA

95–154 girls

About 106 schools statewide

3A / AAA

5A / AAAAA

6A / AAAAAA

PIAA lists 632 schools sponsoring girls volleyball in this cycle. Schools can also move up a class voluntarily. A team’s class is what matters for district and state brackets, even if it plays a league full of bigger or smaller schools.

The 12 PIAA districts

Pennsylvania is split into 12 geographic districts. Regular-season leagues live inside those districts. After the regular season, each district (or a combined region) runs class playoffs and sends a set number of teams to the PIAA tournament.

This site is built around District 3, which includes Lancaster and Lebanon counties along with Adams, Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Perry, and York. District 3 is one of the largest girls volleyball districts, with about 105 teams.

When a class has very few teams in a district, PIAA combines districts into a region so those schools still have a path to states. That is why some brackets list “1 or 12” or “5, 8, or 9” instead of a single district champion.

Leagues vs. class vs. district

A school belongs to three overlapping groups at once: a local league for the regular season, a PIAA class based on enrollment, and a PIAA district based on geography.

League standings answer “who is winning our conference?” Class and district answer “who can make the PIAA tournament?” Those are not the same list. A section champion can miss districts if its power ranking is too low; a team that did not win its league can still qualify.

District 3 leagues

Recognized leagues in District 3 include:

Lancaster-Lebanon League

The L-L League, covering Lancaster and Lebanon County public and some private schools. Girls volleyball is split into three sections. This site’s standings page tracks those sections.

Mid-Penn Conference

Harrisburg-area schools in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, and nearby counties.

YAIAA

York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association. York and Adams County schools.

BCIAA

Berks County Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Tri-Valley League

Smaller schools on the northern edge of District 3.

CCAC and independents

Commonwealth Christian Athletic Conference plus other independent or private schools that still play PIAA schedules.

Lancaster-Lebanon League sections

For 2026, L-L girls volleyball is grouped like this:

Section Teams
Section One Cedar Crest, Conestoga Valley, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Hempfield, Manheim Township, Penn Manor
Section Two Cocalico, ELCO, Garden Spot, Lampeter-Strasburg, Manheim Central, Solanco, Warwick
Section Three Columbia, Lancaster Catholic, Lancaster Mennonite, Lebanon, McCaskey, Northern Lebanon, Octorara

The league then runs its own championship after section play. For 2026 the L-L tournament is scheduled for quarterfinals Monday, October 19; semifinals Tuesday, October 20; and finals Thursday, October 22. That trophy is separate from District 3 and PIAA.

Match rules

PIAA girls volleyball uses NFHS rules. Regular-season and playoff matches are the same basic format.

Officials, coaches, and athletic directors use PIAA’s volleyball page for the current rule posters, preseason bulletin, and weekly NFHS interpretations. Those documents are the official word if anything here is simplified.

The playoff path

There is no single statewide regular-season ranking that puts a team in the PIAA tournament. Qualification is local first, then statewide.

1

Regular season

League and non-league matches build the power ranking and league standings.

2

League playoffs

Optional local titles, such as the L-L championship. These do not replace districts.

3

District / region

Class brackets inside the district. In District 3, entry is by power ranking.

4

PIAA championship

A 16-team bracket in each class, filled by district and region qualifiers.

District 3 tournament

District 3 seeds and qualifies teams with the power ranking on this site. Matches are single elimination, best of five, rally scoring. Consolation matches are used only when needed to fill extra state berths.

For 2026 the ranking source lists this District 3 field size:

Class District 3 teams in the field PIAA state berths from District 3
1A83
2A41
3A41
4A83
5A123 in 2026 · 4 in 2027
6A124

State berths come from PIAA’s 2026 and 2027 girls volleyball qualifier chart. Each class has a 16-team PIAA bracket. Districts with more schools get more entries; small classes in small districts share a regional qualifier.

Other districts set their own entry rules. Some auto-qualify league champions. District 3 girls volleyball does not: the power ranking is the door into the district tournament, and the district tournament is the door into states.
